This year, as we reflect on the 250th anniversary of the American founding, we find ourselves thinking about what gets passed from one generation to the next in our country.

What gets passed down is the American experiment: imperfect, contested, and still very much a work in progress Every generation inherits the current iteration of American democracy, and every generation has the responsibility, and the opportunity, to shape what comes next. That is the work of Teach Democracy.

We teach students to shape the world they want to live in — to create what’s next. And this past year, we committed ourselves, with clarity and urgency, to doing more of it, in more places, for more students.

As America marks 250 years, the students in our programs will be among those who decide what democracy looks like for the next 250. Our job is to make sure they arrive at that moment with the belief that their voice matters and carries power and the skills to make their mark.
