Welcome to Teach Democracy News!

We are excited to welcome you to our official news section, dedicated to promoting civic learning and civic engagement in all schools. Whether you’re a teacher, a school or district administrator, a community leader, or simply someone who believes in the power of informed participation in democracy, you’ve come to the right place.

This news section will serve as your go-to source for updates, insights, and resources related to Teach Democracy and civic education in the United States. Here, we’ll mainly be sharing four types of content:

First, we’ll post announcements about Teach Democracy’s civic-learning activities and events. From workshops and webinars to school partnerships and public programs as well as our Annual Celebration fundraising event, we want you to be the first to know what we’re up to. You’ll also hear about opportunities to get involved, whether it’s by attending an event, sharing your own civic-ducation stories, or volunteering to support our work in any of our local, state, or national programs, including:

  • California Mock Trial
  • Civic Action Project
  • Courtroom to Classroom
  • Expanding Horizons Institute

Second, we’ll feature “think pieces” here on civic education, from within our organization as well as outside of Teach Democracy. These will be short essays or reflections that explore the deeper questions: What does it mean to be an engaged participant in democracy? How can we prepare young people to participate in democracy — even before they can vote in elections? What challenges and opportunities are shaping the future of civic education? These pieces will offer food for thought and invite dialogue on how we can all play a part in encouraging and strengthening lifelong civic engagement.

Third, we’ll share announcements and links to our latest publications and lessons. You’ll find announcements about BRIA (Bill of Rights in Action) curricular magazine, our textbook Criminal Justice in America, and new lessons from our ever-expanding library of free classroom resources for teachers. Our lesson plans and toolkits are designed to inform, inspire, and equip civic educators. We’ll keep you updated as new materials become available, and we’ll let you know how you can use them in your own work.

Finally, this news section will highlight news and updates from across the civic education landscape in the U.S. We’ll spotlight new initiatives; celebrate our successes and those of our partners. We’ll always keep an eye on the public policies and trends that are shaping civic learning nationwide.

We hope this news section becomes a space for learning and for sparking conversation. We feel that civic education is more important than ever, and we believe that by working together with teachers; schools and school districts; project partners; and donors, we can help inspire more informed, engaged, and empowered youth.
